Creatures of Trust

Dear Friend,

Everything around us in this world operates on trust - reliance on others acting in good faith. Deny it though we may, we are creatures of trust in a cosmos of trust.

For instance, we trust that the Internet site that receives our payment will deliver the product we purchased. We trust our spouses to be faithful. We trust our medical doctors' ability to accurately diagnose and successfully treat our ailments. We trust our schools to be good custodians of our children and educate them well.

We trust our politicians to put our societal needs above their personal interests. We trust our government to use our taxes wisely and benevolently, not wastefully and harmfully. We trust our bankers to invest our monies wisely, not wildly, and never violate the terms of our trusts.

We trust our news media to give us a fair and honest accounting of noteworthy events, not slanted reports, intentional misinformation, and misleading propaganda. We trust our scientists to give us factual findings based on sufficient research and scientific methods, not unproven theories or findings that have been falsified to appease donors or institutions.

We trust judges to rule according to law, not their prejudices or political preferences. We trust our ministers to first know, and then fully teach us, what the Bible says about God, this life, and eternity.

We trust our mechanics will not return our automobiles with defective parts that may cause crashes, injuries, and death. We trust pilots to safely transport us through the atmosphere and land us safely at our desired destinations.

We trust our spiritual mentors and Bible teachers to give us sound advice and excellent expositions of Scripture that help us find our way through the maze of life and please and honor Christ.

We trust our policemen to maintain law and order without lawlessness or excessive force; and suspects to obey them without resisting arrest or assaulting them; and lawmakers to support them as they enforce the very statutes they have written. And we could go on ad nauseam.

But note this: None of these trusts are failsafe! In every case, human sin, inefficiency, indifference, or emotional stress may cause those we put implicit trust in to fail us. O my! Where does this leave us?

It leaves us as creatures of trust in an untrustworthy world - and, thus, in need of a Savior!

And there is only one Savior, only one utterly, unfailingly true and trustworthy Being in this false and untrustworthy world: Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ! Pause and consider these Christ-trusts.

We can trust Jesus to be the visible expression of the invisible God: "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father" (John 14:9). We can trust His teachings to be inspired, faultless, unchanging - eternal words upon which we may safely build eternal lives.

We can trust His cross to be the only ultimate answer to our sins and the sins of the world, and His blood to be their only cleanser. We can trust His faithful love alone to never abandon us, His guidance to never mislead, His promises to never fail.

We can trust Him to never break His New Covenant with us. We can trust His instructions on eternal salvation - "Ye must be born again" (John 3:7) - to be as true today as when He first spoke them. We can trust that the epistles written by those who trusted Him are also trustworthy and true.

We may trust that His statements on heaven and hell are accurate, reflecting eternal realities that truly exist though we cannot presently touch or see them. We may trust that His warnings against sin and worldliness are as true and credible as His promises to forgive, reconcile, redeem, and bless us.

We may trust what He said about the Bible, "The Scriptures must be fulfilled" (Mark 14:49), and "The Scripture cannot be broken" (John 10:35). And we can trust what He taught us about His divine Successor, the Holy Spirit, and His repeated, urgent calls for us to receive, listen to, and obey Him.

In these last days, we may trust that Jesus' prophetic declaration, "I will come again, and receive you unto myself" (John 14:3), and the signs of the times He gave us, and the spiritual readiness warnings He spoke, are all binding, compelling, and of utmost importance as His coming grows closer every day.

And note this: All these Christ-trusts are utterly true and failsafe! All who rely on them, because they rely on Him, will never regret their reliance.

So, my fellow creature of trust, in what or whom are you placing your total or final trust? In this world of trust, there is only One worth trusting! Trust your soul and world to Him.

Trusting Him,

GregSig2
